Lenovo has rolled out a system update for the same. The update is around 111 MB “X2_AP_ROW_S120_141103

After launching the Vibe X2 in India and making it available on Flipkart a few days back, Lenovo has rolled out a system update for the same. The update is around 111 MB “X2_AP_ROW_S120_141103 …” will fix some software bugs and increase device stability. Go to settings, about and system update and manually check for the update.
I have the X2 with me and have just updated it. Make sure to keep the battery percent at over 50% before proceeding with the update. Though your data will not be erased it is advisable to backup just in case.
The update was smooth and my data was intact.Lenovo had bought Motorola, incidentally I tried connecting the Moto 360 with the X2 and it failed to connect, this was before the update. After the update this is the first thing I tried and it worked. I can now connect my Moto 360 smart-watch with the Vibe X2, seems like the issue was with the built in security app, this time I got the notification that the 360 wanted access permission.

Too busy for healthy food? This Japanese startup just got $424,000 to deliver it to you

Between the cigarettes, the canned coffee, and the seemingly endless overtime required to keep Japan Inc. running, the country’s notoriously hardworking salarymen (and their female equivalent, “OLs”) hardly have time to sleep – let alone make healthy eating decisions. When even a 15 minute lunch break can be too much, grabbing the first Cup Noodle or bento box at the nearest convenience store is often the only dining option. Enter Tokyo-based Kompeito, the startup behind veggie delivery service Office de Yasai that allows even the most time-strapped desk jockey enjoy a healthy snack for a reasonable price.

Kompeito today announced that it has received a JPY 50 million (US$424,000) investment from ubiquitous mayonnaise producer Kewpie – mayonnaise is a bit of a cutural phenomenon in Japan, and Kewpie is the country’s most popular brand. In addition to raising capital, the two entities will form a partnership that will see Kompeito benefit from Kewpie’s more than 100 years of purchasing, logistics, and product development experience.

The startup, launched in April this year, differentiates itself from other on-demand delivery services like Dely and Line Wow by installing refrigerators at offices that subscribe to the service. Each week, it is stocked with single-serving packs of fresh, domestically-grown vegetables that cost between JPY 100 and 200 (US$0.85 to 1.70). The service operates on an honor system – workers drop coins into a payment box attached to the fridge. Companies don’t pay anything for the fridge rental, but must commit to a minimum delivery plan based on the staff’s needs.

Initially limited to Tokyo’s 23 wards, serving approximately 200 locations throughout the capital as of October 2014, the new funds and partnership will allow Office de Yasai service to spread across the entirety of Japan. The startup expects to increase distribution to 1,000 locations by next spring – with a goal of 2,000 locations by the end of 2015.

Sprint lowers Nexus 6 contract price to $249, to refund buyers who paid $299

Anyone that plans on buying a Nexus 6 at Sprint will be pleased to know that the contract price has been lowered from $299 to $249. If you already purchased Google’s new phablet for $299 at Sprint, you will also be pleased to know that you’re about to get some money back, as the company has vowed to refund those that purchased the Nexus 6 for the original $299.

Sound too good to be true? Well, here’s the proof directly from Sprint:

For those counting, that brings the total price of the Sprint Nexus 6 to $648, which makes it exactly 1 dollar cheaper than the carrier free version you’ll find on Google Play. The ad only mentions the 32GB “Midnight Blue” version specifically, the only version available on Sprint right now.

On a side note, the statement also provided information on a discount pertaining to the LG G2 getting a nice little $139.99 cut.

Sprint hasn’t given an exact date on issuing the refund or how the process of getting one will work for those that ordered the Nexus 6 before the price drop, but here’s hoping that it happens quickly.

Benchmarks show effect of device encryption on Nexus 6 performance

Nexus devices shipping with Lollipop have full device encryption turned on by default. That’s great from a privacy point of view, but the downside is encryption takes its toll on performance, as benchmarks from AnandTech and direct observations show.

Background

A bit of background: Google has first included the ability to fully encrypt a device on Honeycomb. But that was optional, and most users weren’t even aware of it. However, following the NSA revelations and the growing public awareness of digital privacy issues, Google decided to enable device encryption by default on devices shipping with Lollipop.

Starting with Lollipop, all the data on the device is encrypted by default (with a default password when no password is set, and using the user’s PIN/password/patterns when those are set.) This means the processor must do a bit of extra work each time data is written (encrypted) or read from storage (decrypted).

According to benchmarks ran by AnandTech’s Brandon Chester and Joshua Ho the impact of all those cryptographic operations is quite significant. The two ran a benchmark called AndEBench, that is designed to test storage read/write performance, on the Nexus 6 with encryption on (default state), on a modified Nexus 6 with encryption off, as well as on Nexus 5 with encryption on and off.

Google launches Divide Productivity Preview for corporate users

In May Google acquired Divide, a company that creates containers for enterprise and personal content on Android phones. Now the first fruits of this acquisition can be seen in the new Divide Productivity Preview.

This new experience has landed in the Play Store, though it can only be used as part of the Android IT Preview Program. Basically the invite-only suite consists of a set of business apps for email, calendar, contacts, tasks and downloads. Of course, all the app suite is designed to work with a company’s existing Exchange/ActiveSync infrastructure.

One thing you’ll notice right away about the business app suite is that they are packing Material Design elements throughout, which should make them pair very well with devices running Android 5.0 Lollipop. For more details in the program, you can potentially sign up here, and can grab the app from Google Play.

Download Finless 1.2 Custom ROM for R28 / R89 / HPH TV Boxes

Download Finless 1.2 Custom ROM for R28 / R89 / HPH TV Boxes from here or here

Archive name: finless_r28_r89_hph_3288_rom1_2
Archive file size: 395 MB

Support: Rockchip RK3288

Features and release notes for my 1.2 ROM: 1) Stock ROM was only 2 gigs of APP space.
I now supply you with 3 parameter files to choose from: 2gig - the default if you do nothing, 4gig, 8gig. If you guys want more let me know.
 2) Debloated of junk APPs.This includes the XBMC that came with 110K4, etc.
Why? Because if I don't do this and you do a factory reset, that XBMC always gets installed on first boot! Removing it allows you to install whatever XBMC you want. I do supply the original XBMC that came with this ROM in the Removed_apps folder so you can install it if you want.
 3) All Google Apps and Google framework, Play Store, etc are updated to the latest as of this date. Not sure why Beelink doesn’t update? 4) As always, I added full init.d support! If you do not know what that is... ignore it.  For geeks that want to use it. It is there! 5) Build.prop edit to open up the Google Play store to APPs that normally say "not compatible". I am spoofing a Samsung device that will show almost any APP as compatible. Your device will show up in google play as Samsung device not a R89 or R29! Understand this please.I also left the original build.prop in the ROM called build.orig. If you want to go back, just use ES FIle Explorer or a root file explorer and rename build.prop to build.old. Then rename build.orig to build.prop.Go into settings, apps, all and go into the Google Play app. Clear the cache and data.Reboot! You should be back to showing up as a R89. 6) I added a reboot APP that will allow optional reboot options like reboot to bootloader (flash mode). 7) Other tweaks I do to add performance like buffer sizes, etc. Yes I still tweaked the TCPIP buffers! Other tweaks which are my trade secret 8) I did a tiny bit of theming to the launcher3 wallpaper. 9) I removed kernel from boot.img. This will allow using different kernels later as the Dev's here make them.

What is Dangerous Ivan?

What is Dangerous Ivan?

Dangerous Ivan is a 2D platformer and shooter where you play as a character named Ivan. You’ll regularly interact with bad guys, challenging platforms, bears, vodka, and other stuff. It’s currently free to play in the Google Play Store with in app purchases.

The game is your classic 2D platformer with shooter elements. You’ll have to jump up and down various things, shoot bad guys (and bears), and avoid obstacles. The game play is a little slow but that actually comes in handy when things get a little chaotic. The graphics are bright, colorful, and give the illusion of 3D which makes the game look pretty good but not amazing.

There are two game modes: story and survival. In story mode you’ll break into a mansion and explore it. It’s a pretty typical premise with the usual array of traps and bad guys to avoid and kill respectively. There is Google Play Games support with leaderboards so you can go on speed runs and compete with your friends which adds a little bit of depth.

Survival mode is exactly what it sounds like. You’re put in a level and you must survive the endless waves of bad guys and obstacles for as long as possible. There are leaderboards for this as well for you Google Play Games users out there. Combined, the two modes make one enjoyable game that you shouldn’t feel too bad about wasting an afternoon playing.

It's way more enjoyable if you read all the dialogue in a Russian accent.

PROS
  • Two modes: story and survival. They're both fun.
  • Google Play Games services for those that enjoy that.
  • Simple graphics and mechanics (including on screen controls) make the game easy to pick up and play.
  • Small game (31MB) and what in app purchases it does have don't cost more than $0.99
CONS
  • It's slow and while that is an advantage during some parts of the game, it may be too slow for some people.
  • It's new so there will almost certainly be a bug or two for some people.
7.0
Overall, it’s an enjoyable title. Obviously, if you don’t like 2D platformers then you won’t like this game either. Fans of the genre should enjoy it and the addition of Google Play Games services and survival mode add a bit of depth and replayability. It’s free so it doesn’t cost anything to check it out.

Nokia Z Launcher quick look! (video)

The Nokia Z Launcher was recently released in beta to the Google Play Store. It’s been met with mixed reviews and we thought that we would give it a try and see what we think. This is a quick look at the Nokia Z Launcher. If you would rather watch it instead of read it, the video is linked above.

The first thing you’ll notice about the Nokia Z Launcher is how clean it is. There aren’t any unnecessary widgets or controls to worry about. It is just this one home screen along with an app drawer and a fairly barebones settings menu.

On the home screen you’ll see a short list of the applications you use the most and, in some cases, the people you contact most frequently. Along the bottom is your standard dock with four shortcuts and the app drawer button. Finally, along the top, there is a scrollable clock widget. If you scroll to the right you’ll see your next upcoming calendar event and finally one more swipe brings you to the weather.

The hallmark feature of the Nokia Z Launcher is the gesture controls. It works by essentially combining your home screen with an app search function. You draw the first letter of the application you want and sometimes you may have to draw additional letters. The app then pops up and you open it.
The other big feature is that the Z Launcher learns what apps you like and shows them to you during different parts of the day. I’ve only had it a day so I couldn’t really test this one but contextual stuff is usually hit or miss so your results may vary.

In the app drawer you’ll find one big, long, alphabetized list of all of your applications. At the top you’ll see a gear symbol to get to the Z Launcher settings and an icon shortcut to take you to the Google Play Store and while it is a small thing, the Play Store shortcut is a nice touch.
Here’s the thing, folks, that’s really it. I can’t stress enough how minimal and easy-to-use this launcher really is and that is both its biggest strength and its greatest weakness. Thanks to its clean, small, minimal style, the launcher uses little memory and doing anything requires very little time or effort and we liked that a lot. Many launchers these days have a labyrinth of features and settings but Z Launcher keeps it simple.

ARM’s secret recipe for power efficient processing

There are several different companies that design microprocessors. There is Intel, AMD, Imagination (MIPS), and Oracle (Sun SPARC) to name a few. However, none of these companies is known exclusively for their power efficiency. That isn’t to say they don’t have designs aimed at power efficiency, but this isn’t their specialty. One company that does specialize in energy efficient processors is ARM.

While Intel might be making chips needed to break the next speed barrier, ARM has never designed a chip that doesn’t fit into a predefined energy budget. As a result, all of ARM’s designs are energy efficient and ideal for running in smartphones, tablets and other embedded devices. But what is ARM’s secret? What is the magic ingredient that helps ARM to produce continually high performance processor designs with low power consumption?

A high-end i7 processor has a maximum TDP (Thermal Design Power) of 130 watts. The average ARM-based chip uses just two watts max budget for the multi-core CPU cluster, two watts for the GPU and maybe 0.5 watts for the MMU and the rest of the SoC!

In a nutshell, the ARM architecture. Based on RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computing), the ARM architecture doesn’t need to carry a lot of the baggage that CISC (Complex Instruction Set Computing) processors include to perform their complex instructions. Although companies like Intel have invested heavily in the design of their processors so that today they include advanced superscalar instruction pipelines, all that logic means more transistors on the chip, more transistors means more energy usage. The performance of an Intel i7 chip is very impressive, but here is the thing, a high-end i7 processor has a maximum TDP (Thermal Design Power) of 130 watts. The highest performance ARM-based mobile chip consumes less than four watts, oftentimes much less.

This isn't the world of desktops and big cooling fans, this is the world of ARM.

And this is why ARM is so special, it doesn’t try to create 130W processors, not even 60W or 20W. The company is only interested in designing low-power processors. Over the years, ARM has increased the performance of its processors by improving the micro-architecture design, but the target power budget has remained basically the same. In very general terms, you can breakdown the TDP of an ARM SoC (System on a Chip, which includes the CPU, the GPU and the MMU, etc.) as follows. Two watts max budget for the multi-core CPU cluster, two watts for the GPU and maybe 0.5 watts for the MMU and the rest of the SoC. If the CPU is a multi-core design, then each core will likely use between 600 to 750 milliwatts.

These are all very generalized numbers because each design that ARM has produced has different characteristics. ARM’s first Cortex-A processor was the Cortex-A8. It only worked in single-core configurations, but it is still a popular design and can be found in devices like the BeagleBone Black. Next came the Cortex-A9 processor, which brought speed improvements and the ability for dual-core and quad-core configurations. Then came the Cortex-A5 core, which was actually slower (per core) than the Cortex-A8 and A9 but used less power and was cheaper to make. It was specifically designed for low-end multi-core applications like entry-level smartphones.
